General overview of role

A Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to work on multiple projects, researching and developing new technologies and applications, and engineering a wide range of products for a small, dynamic, company with world leading cooling technology applied to the medical, domestic and retail sectors.

Working closely with the Project Lead this role will enable Sure Chill to design and deliver innovative solutions to some of the world’s most challenging cooling problems.


Main Duties and Responsibilities
  • Lead and coordinate mechanical design engineering work within projects.
  • Responsible for developing and engineering features, components, and assemblies in 3D CAD.
  • Generating new and revise 2D detailed engineering drawing with consideration to manufacturing tolerances, measurement and design intent.
  • Input at a high level on design decisions; this requires an understanding of all aspects of the design from working principles to the operating conditions.
  • Assisting project delivery by supporting in the creation of project plans and controlling design projects.
  • Establish a technical rapport and liaison with customers and suppliers including site visits as required with occasional overseas travel.
  • Potential business Travel within UK and abroad to visit suppliers / customers.

Skills and Competencies
  • Strong engineering background with an emphasis in mechanical design and the ability to meet deadlines.

  • Demonstrable competence of delivering measurable results in a complex project environment.

  • Experience of working with cross – functional project teams to achieve objectives on complex projects.

  • Proficient use of CAD packages (preferably SolidWorks); 3D modelling, 2D technical drawings and rapid prototyping.

  • Able to create, understand, develop complex features, components and assemblies.

  • Strong interpersonal, communication and influencing skills with ability to liaise across all areas of the business (report writing, presentations).


Education and Experience
  • Qualified to degree level in Mechanical Engineering.

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in new product development or manufacturing environment.

  • Mechanical design and development of plastic parts with full understanding of tooling requirements and features.

  • Proven experience taking component parts from first concept through detail design and development to mass manufacture.

  • In-depth plastics material knowledge and previous experience of plastics moulding, tooling and manufacturing processes.

  • Design for manufacture experience (at mass production scale).

  • White goods design experience and/or experience or knowledge of refrigeration would be a distinct advantage.

  • Design of products for developing countries or otherwise interest/time spent in developing countries will be considered an advantage.
