General overview of role

A Thermal Design and Analysis Engineer to work on multiple projects, researching, modelling, analysing and designing new technologies and applications for a small, dynamic, company with world leading cooling technology applied to the medical, domestic and retail sectors.

Working closely with the Senior R&D Engineer and Project Lead this role will enable Sure Chill to design and deliver innovative solutions to some of the world’s most challenging cooling problems.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
  • Within the R&D team the role will have a variety of design, analysis and validation tasks but primary responsibility will be thermal design and analysis of key product concepts and components.
  • Propose technical concepts and validate them using Finite Element Modelling and experimental tests.

  • Define test plans, conduct tests and analyse and review the results.

  • Work closely with other Mechanical Engineers to implement designs in CAD.

  • Make recommendations on design decisions; this requires an in-depth understanding of the application of engineering principles in the fields of mechanical design, heat transfer and fluid mechanics. Use of numerical and physical modelling.

  • Create well-reasoned and thorough technical reports/presentations to support engineering analysis, design decisions and design verification and technical investigations.

  • Establish technical rapport with other team members and external suppliers.

  • Potential occasional business travel within UK and abroad to visit suppliers.

Skills and Competencies
  • Strong engineering background with an emphasis in mechanical design, heat transfer and fluid mechanics.

  • Proficient use of FEM packages(COMSOL (preferred) or ANSYS) and SolidWorks for 3D and 2D thermal modelling.

  • Strong analytical skills and a passion for solving complex problems.

  • Competent with computer modelling techniques, design of computer and practical experiments and model validation.

  • Rapid prototyping skills and experience a distinct advantage.

  • Demonstrable competence of delivering measurable results in a complex project environment.

  • Strong interpersonal, communication and influencing skills with ability to liaise across all areas of the business (report writing, presentations).

Education and Experience
  • Qualified to degree level in either Engineering, Physics or Mathematics

  • Minimum 3-5 years’ experience in new product development.

  • Mechanical design and development experience would be valuable.

  • Experience of working with cross – functional project teams to achieve objectives on complex projects and the ability to meet deadlines.

  • Project involvement with designs that have gone from first concept through detail design and development to mass manufacture is desirable.

  • Design for manufacture experience (at mass production scale) advantageous.

  • White goods design experience and/or experience or knowledge of refrigeration would be desirable.
